my baby...my pet
2008-03-30, 11:17 a.m.
I had two cats and a dog before I met my husband. My husband thinks that cats and dogs are just fine as long as they're not in the house. It's a matter of hair. He's not allergic, but he can't stand the site of hair balls floating around on the kitchen floor just feet away from his food.
I remember when we had just started dating and he first discovered I had pets. I thought it had been a deal breaker when he cut the date short, kissed me gingerly on the cheek, then didn't call for two weeks.
Later when we got together again and he came to my place for dinner I was insulted when he didn't eat. He said he had already eaten but I knew it was the animals. I had told him I was cooking him a nice dinner, why would he eat before coming to my place?
Anyway....when the relationship grew and things progressed my husband never told me my pets had to go, but there was an unspoken agreement that if they didn't he would.
For a good two years after finding them all wonderful homes (one cat is with my birthmother, the dog went to a friend and the other cat now lives in a beautiful high rise on Manhattan's upper westside) I would cry every time I saw a cat or dog.
To make light of the situation my husband always promised me he'd give me a baby and that when I had that baby I wouldn't think twice about having a pet.
I could have never thought it possible that a baby could replace my need to care for an animal. I have always been an adamant animal lover but never one to fawn over babies.
Now three years of marriage and a baby later I can honestly say that he's right. I cannot even begin to imagine my life with a baby AND a pet to care for. Having a child requires all of your love and attention.
How do you moms with several children AND household pets do it? Either way I envy you.
I do however know that the day will come when my son is older and wants a puppy. And he will look at my husband with those beautiful blue eyes and say "Daddy pleeeeeeeease." I would love to see what his daddy says to THAT!
I bet he can't say no!
