losing our children to a virtual world

Today on Oprah, families were put to the challenge to see if they could go without television, computers, video games, long showers, eating out, and purchasing new products over a seven day period. I was struck by one young boy, I believe he was no more than eight years old, who was so addicted to using the family computer and playing games on his Playstation that when his father found him sneaking on the computer his response was, "But dad..I can't live without it!"
My son is no where near this boy's age, but I'm already worried about this sort of thing happening to him. I don't want him growing up in a virtual world, staring at television and computer screens all day. I want him to spend his free time using his imagination, reading, drawing, playing outside with his friends, making mud pies, building forts, playing dodge ball, tag and riding his bike.
I'm a mom of a six month old so I have plenty of time before I'll have to deal with my son's begging and pleading to get the latest games on the market because, I'm sure he'll tell me, "All my friends have them."
But it's inevitable...the day WILL come when I'll be faced with this dilemna, and in my son's eyes I will become "mean mommy" overnight if I don't give in to his wishes. And by then who knows what kinds of games will be on the market. I can only imagine.
As a concerned mom I can tell you that my son will not be playing hours upon hours of video games, and he will not have a television or a computer in his bedroom. But I find it encouraging that there are now games like Guitar Hero on the market that are creative and fun (and from what I hear extremely addictive) and do not involve any violent images.
Expand Upon Your Guitar Hero experience with downloadable songs, themes and picture packs! Challenge the Legends (Guitar Hero Aerosmith comes out in June of this year), see how you match up against the best players in the world on the Leaderboards. Each of the Guitar Hero Games have over 45 of the Most Legendary Rock Anthems of All Time!
Of course you don't have to be a kid to enjoy a lot of the video games that are out there. I'm sure there are plenty of husbands and boyfriends glued to the television set with a joystick in their hands even as I am writing this, when they should be taking out the garbage.
Bottom line, if you're looking for something for your child that's fun and educational that doesn't involve violence I recommend Guitar Hero. But make sure you buy yourself (and your neighbors) a set of ear plugs!

No, it's possible for kids to get along just fine without it, I nannied two kids who were given a choice of half hour a day between either tv or the computer, I think moderation is key. I think some parents probably tend to use it as a crutch and surrogate babysitter 100% of the time as opposed to 25%, that's where the kids get the dependency.
